Javelin Star Arshad Nadeem Qualified for Paris Olympics

In a feat that is unheard of and has never been experienced, Arshad Nadeem has once again made Pakistan proud. The javelin star rose to fame just last year with his heroics at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Now, he has done the unthinkable and has qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024.

He has also secured a spot in the final of the World Athletics Championship. The proud son of Pakistan created history once again as he represented Pakistan at the World Athletics Championship, which is being held in Budapest, Hungary.

Representing Pakistan at the World Athletics Championship, Arshad participated in the javelin throw segment. He managed to make a remarkable throw of 86.79 meters in his third attempt.

This helped Arshad to secure a place in the final of the World Athletics Championship, as well as his participation in the Olympics that will be held in Paris next year. The final for javelin throw in the World Athletics Championship will be played on 27th August, which is Sunday.

According to the qualifying stipulation for the Olympics, Arshad Nadeem had to achieve a minimum distance of 85.50 meters. In his first two tries, Arshad managed to achieve a distance of 70.63 meters and 81.53 meters; however, he managed to surpass the minimum requirement on his third try. He managed to make a remarkable throw of 86.79 meters in his third attempt.

In August of the previous year, Nadeem accomplished a historic javelin throw during the Commonwealth Games final event, clinching Pakistan’s inaugural track and field medal in 56 years.

Nadeem’s astonishing 90.18-meter toss marked Pakistan’s initial athletics medal at the Games since 1966, and it secured the nation’s first-ever javelin gold. This achievement surpassed Mohammad Nawaz’s silver medal from the inaugural edition of the quadrennial multi-sport spectacle in 1954 and Jalal Khan’s second-place finish in 1958.

He clinched that distance on his fifth throw, emerging victorious in a field that featured world champion Anderson Peters, former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott, and former Commonwealth and world champion Julius Yego.

Who is Arshad Nadeem?

Arshad Nadeem was born on January 2, 1997, in Mian Channu, a small town in Punjab, Pakistan. He is the third-oldest of eight siblings. Nadeem was an exceptionally versatile athlete from his early school years. He dabbled in all the sports on offer in his school — cricket, badminton, football, and athletics — but his passion was cricket, and he soon found himself playing it at district-level tape-ball tournaments.

Upon entering grade seven in school, Arshad caught the eye of Rasheed Ahmad Saqi during an athletics competition. Saqi was a former javelin thrower himself, and he saw the potential in Nadeem. He started coaching Nadeem, and Nadeem quickly showed his talent for the sport.

In 2016, Nadeem won the silver medal at the National Junior Athletics Championships. He followed that up with a bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Junior Athletics Championships. In 2018, he won a bronze medal at the Asian Games.

Nadeem’s breakthrough came in 2019 when he qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He finished fifth in the final, becoming the first Pakistani to reach the final of an Olympic track and field event.

In 2022, Nadeem won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. He threw a distance of 90.18m, which was a new national and Commonwealth Games record.
