Water Shortage in Pakistan and Kalabagh Dam Case Notice by CJP

Pakistan has many God Gifted resources as gas, Coal, Water etc. But now the big problem that Pakistan is facing is the Water Shortage in the whole country. Mian Saqib Nisar the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) took notice on Water Shortage and construction of Kalabagh Dam. He said that this case would be heard on first priority as water scarcity is the biggest problem for the country. The Water experts and former Wapda Chairmen Shams-ul-Mulk and Zafar Mahmood also summoned to find solution about water shortage issue.

Details about Construction of Kalabagh Dam

Council of Common Interest (CCI) in September 16, 1991 in the sixth session had given a go-ahead for the dam. The four provinces of Pakistan gave approval about the dam and shown consent for its construction.

On May 9, 1998 the ninth meeting of the CCI the case was reviewed under the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

On November 29, 2012 the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered federal government to begin its construction. But the government don’t show any interest about its construction.

Chief Justice’s Notice on Water Shortage

Supreme Court (SC) Karachi registry scheduled to conduct hearings about Kalabagh Dam and water crises on June 9 2018 in the next week. So Mian Saqib Nisar the Chief Justice of Pakistan said water is one of the most important priority among all priorities and we will solve this problem with complete concentration.

Supreme Court summoned the answer about scarcity of water in Pakistan from CDA officers, Attorney General and Advocate General by issuing notices. Mian Saqib Nisar the Chief Justice of Pakistan conduct a hearing on the application of 20 years old from barrister Zafar-ul-Allah about scarcity of water and construction of dam. The applicant said if the situation will remain same then we all will die because 20% development developed on water. There are 48 years has been passed in which no dam has been constructed.

The chief justice also said “River Neelum is bound to dry out due to Kishanganga Dam constructed by India. So “We will find a legal solution to secure our children’s future because Pakistan’s existence depends on water”. There is not a single party which prioritized the water issue in their election manifestos.

If Mian Saqib Nisar the Chief Justice of Pakistan do something about dam then dam would be constructed on Indus River at Kalabagh in Mianwali district. If it built then it can generate 3,600-megawatt electricity.
